I am not an Expert in SMFNEW, but I believe it is possible either the option is available in the ACP or it is only accessible by a modification.

Yes, it is. Many other SMF Hosts have done so. The main options of an SMF Portal is three rows, header and footer. Header (usually a chatbox), Footer (usaully stats or radio), Row 1 (usually new topics, affiliates), Row 2 (usually News), Row 3 (usually 'Whos Online', Board Statistics).

Of course all of these things are customizable, like where what go's, you could put a selection of options in 1 of the 5 areas. And you can create your own HTML based area in the Portal (such as a side NavBar).

And the same styled portal is placed into alot of phpBB hosted Forum's as well.
